London Census - Viewing the Census Online

The London Census & London Indexes are available online at www.TheGenealogist.co.uk - also available are census records for other counties in England and Wales, along with birth, marriage and death records, parish records, and many other resources.

What is a Census Name Index?

A census name index is an index of names compiled from the census records. It can be searched by surname, forename and age.

For large counties like London or Yorkshire, indexing census names is a mammoth task and a huge amount of manpower is required to compile those records.

How are the Census Name Indexes built?

S&N Genealogy Supplies, a major UK-based company, has been funding a census name-indexing project and their existing databases are available online at www.TheGenealogist.co.uk.

Thousands of volunteers from all over the UK have contributed to this project, and thousands of new records are regularly being added to the ever-expanding database. An interest in genealogy, along with cultural, historical and geographical knowledge of the UK gives the volunteers an advantage in producing more accurate results.

The results are used for checking full transcription projects completed overseas and in published indexes. To learn more about this project or to become a volunteer, visit www.TheGenealogist.co.uk.

The official records of birth, marriage and death and the census records do not go back as far as parish records. Parish Records started in 1538 when Thomas Cromwell (the Vicar General to King Henry VIII) declared that all marriages, christenings and burials should be recorded. For years before the census began, Parish Records are a very useful resource. A wide range of London Parish Records is available on CD and some are now online.
